Recording Policy

Life is fleeting! We want everyone at Youth Traditional Song Weekend to be fully present (mentally, physically, and emotionally) in song sessions and cherish the ephemeral. Our hope is that attendees and staff will focus on the shared experience of the weekend. We also recognize that recording can be a useful tool for learning songs, and want to let attendees use recording devices for that purpose.

With these goals in mind, our recording policy is as follows:

Recording is allowed only in the following situations:

  • In a private session, with the direct consent of the person being recorded. This means there is no recording in large-group sessions, such as late-night open singing (see exception below).
    • After hearing a song you want to learn, we encourage you to find the the singer and ask them about it. You can ask to record them singing their version privately, or ask about their sources for the song so that you can explore it further (Where did they learn it? What are other versions like? What’s the song’s history?). Or both!
    • Consent to record does not mean consent to share on social media. Ask the person you are recording before sharing on facebook, youtube, etc.
  • When a workshop leader announces that recording can happen during their workshop.  This announcement may be made at the beginning of a workshop. If you miss this announcement, please don’t record and please don’t interrupt the workshop to ask about recording.
This policy applies to all singing sessions and workshops.  Beyond the specific cases listed above, there is no audio or video recording.

This policy is put forward in good faith, and we expect all participants to follow the policy. We know that this is a different approach to using recording devices than many people are used to, so thanks in advance for your help!
